Jaipur Golden Hospital, Rohini celebrates Hand hygiene Awareness week from May 2nd - 7th, 2016. The importance of washing hands before and after patient contact has been recognized by health professionals worldwide. The practice is central to efforts to reduce spread of infection and has clearly demonstrated efficacy in infection control. The goal of Hand hygiene Awareness Week is to decrease the spread of infectious diseases by empowering individuals to educate and help protect themselves as well as their patients.
The theme for this year, Hand hygiene awareness week focuses on preventing Surgical Site Infections. It was a week long activity to strengthen awareness about Hand Hygiene amongst all hospital staff. More than 250 staff participated in the activities. There were awareness sessions by eminent speakers, Poster competition, Skit by Nursing staff, Quiz for doctors, Nurses, Technicians and other staff etc.
One of the major focus of the week was to educate staff, not only to wash their hands but also focus on the correct technique of washing hands in order to make Hand hygiene / washing effective. Even if employees practice proper hand hygiene, its important to plan for additional cleaning and disinfection by using the proper cleaning tools, chemicals and processes to keep employees healthy and safe. Specific mock drills were conducted for Housekeeping staff in order to train them to disinfect high touch surfaces like Door knobs, Handles, desks, shelves, switch boards etc.
There were awareness sessions for patients and families as well on how to maintain hand hygiene post surgery and in case of Immuno compromised patients.
The Infection control team and Quality team worked jointly to monitor Hand hygiene compliance rate in various units and this week saw an additional 12% increase in the baseline compliance. The entire staff participated enthusiastically and took a pledge to sustain the hand hygiene compliance in their daily work activities and make a difference!
